Best Milk Thistle Supplements for Fatty Liver

In today’s article, I will be recommending the top milk thistle supplements for fatty liver disease on the market to make it easier for you to choose one and start reversing your condition now.

If you don’t want to go through the entire article, you should know that I have two top recommendations:

Milk Thistle (also known as Silymarin) is one of the natural supplements that’s considered to be extremely beneficial to our livers.

It is usually the first supplement that is recommended to those diagnosed with a fatty liver and it was recommended to me as well by the hepatologists I have visited after being diagnosed.

As a result, I have personally taken milk thistle supplements without any problems (and I have reversed my fatty liver since so it might’ve helped).

Now let’s get a bit more in depth in terms of what options you have and which are, in my opinion, the best Milk Thistle you should take.

Please note: I get commissions for purchases made through links in this article.

Puritan’s Pride Milk Thistle – Top Choice

This one is one of the bestselling products on Amazon, offering good quality at a really low price. You simply can’t ask for much more!

Also, you can’t get that popular unless you offer some really high quality in return, and this is definitely the case of Puritan’s Pride milk thistle supplement.

Even though it appears, from reading the bottle that it has 1,000mg milk thistle extract, they are referring to the whole herb extract used in creating the pills.

But for the active ingredient, the extract, it is exactly 250mg, which is what the doctors usually recommend as a daily dose. This is what I took – 1 pill per day, every morning (more details on how to take it further down in the article)

There are 180 softgels inside, meaning that you have 6 months of milk thistle supply here.

The price is really good too – so good that you simply shouldn’t ignore this. Definitely consider it.

Liver Support Plus – Best Alternative

If you are all about natural remedies and herbal supplements, this product is what you need, as it has milk thistle, but also other ingredients that are claimed to have a healing effect on the liver.

One pill has 200mg of Sylimarin aka Milk Thisle, which is a bit under the daily recommended dose, but it also has other active ingredients such as Beetroot, Zinc, Chicory root and many, many other plant extracts that are mixed together to give your liver a boost.

I have mixed feelings about these natural supplements because I generally prefer science backed data, but I don’t want to completely take the out of the question either especially because there are people reporting good results after using them.

My guess is that the worst it can to is not work (which I highly doubt, though) so it’s your decision if you should go for a potentially better mix or stick to nothing but Milk Thistle.

The word and feedback for Liver Support Plus is really solid though, so keep that in mind.

Nature’s Bounty Milk Thistle

This is another solid milk thistle supplement for fatty liver disease. It has exactly the dose recommended by my doctor and one container has 200 capsules – so more than 6 months of supply.

Also, with so many pills in a bottle, you don’t have to worry about constantly ordering them back and forth or actually running out.

Plus, we’re talking about a Nature’s Bounty product – these are always of high quality and this particular one is, at the moment of writing, having a score of 4.7 stars out of 5 on Amazon (which is a really high rating).

Back to this silymarin supplement, it is made in the USA and can be used safely. A good choice if you want a larger quantity from a better known brand.

In the end, it’s up for you to decide which of these supplements to take and it’s always best to make this decision after talking to your doctor.

They are all good in my opinion and no matter which one you choose, they should help you a lot in getting your fatty liver reversed.

But remember: you do need to stick to your diet and continue changing your lifestyle, as these supplements alone are not a replacement for good eating, drinking and living habits!

How to take milk thistle if you have a fatty liver?

My doctor’s recommendation was to take one pill with 250mg of Milk Thistle extract every morning for 90 days, then take a break for 1 month and then repeat.

You can go up to two per day with the recommended ones above, but it’s always best and safest to just ask your doctor as they sure know better based on your situation.

Mine, for example, even though recommended a dose of 250mg of milk thistle per day, told me that I should take 500mg daily for the first month (so two pills).

We have already talked about milk thistle in a previous article (make sure you read it in case you know nothing about it and its beneficial effects), so we already know that it is considered to have no side effects, so even if you take two per day it’s probably still safe.

IMPORTANT! When taking these supplements, it’s extremely important to have one thing in mind: although silymarin (aka milk thistle) has been always associated with improved liver functions and has been praised for its healing effects over the liver, it won’t do wonders by itself.

In other words, this is not a medicine that will reverse your fatty liver alone. You still need to stick to your diet, lose weight (if needed) and exercise in order to make it happen.

Milk thistle is said to help and probably does, but it’s not the cure and just it alone won’t help much.

However, any extra help is welcome – that is always my motto – so why not give your liver an even better and bigger boost with my recommended milk thistle supplement for fatty liver?

They are cheap and, at worst, they won’t have any effect. But if science-backed studies are correct, they will help your recovery a lot.

Wrapping up

In conclusion, you now have my top three choices when it comes to the best milk thistle supplement to help you reverse your fatty liver disease.

You can go for plain Milk Thistle or choose a product that has it mixed up with other extracts and minerals that are known to help the liver recover.

No matter which one you choose, I am sure they will help you in your quest of getting healthy again.

  1. I am afraid to take milk thistle because I am on so much medications and also I am allergic to most plants and trees.Do you think that I could have a reaction from milk thistle?

    • I never heard of any allergic reactions to milk thistle, but this is not my area of expertise. If you know to be allergic, it’s best to talk to your doctor before taking it.
