Best Teas to Protect the Liver and Help with Fatty Liver Disease

Finding drinks that support your recovery after a MASLD (formerly NAFLD) is not easy. We know that water is the safest beverage, coffee has its benefits, but tea is in a somewhat grey area: some say it could help, some say it doesn’t.

The truth is probably somewhere in the middle: tea alone won’t reverse fatty liver disease, but it might support your journey. It’s not just potentially helpful, but it’s also pleasant and calming – so perfect to add to your already restricted daily routine.

This article covers them all: the best tea that can support liver health, what science says about them, how to drink them, what to watch out for, and basically everything you need to know on the matter.

Other herbal teas might also help, but factual evidence is limited. However, since drinking these teas in moderation has no side effects, you should try them and hope for the best.

As it was my case with milk thistle, since the worst that can happen is nothing, then why not try if some claim there are indeed benefits?

Among these, we have aiding with weight loss and liver detoxification. There are actual studies to support these claims, so we have all the good signs to use this tea.

Do have in mind that it contains caffeine, so if you are on a low caffeine diet, this might not be for you.

I personally enjoy it by itself – no sweeteners or anything added to it (can also try adding some fresh lemon juice for a nice twist).

While there is no recommended number of cups you should drink per day, I personally stick to two: one in the morning, one in the evening. But at the same time, just one per day or even 3-4 cups would also be OK.

Also check the boxes of the teas you purchase and follow their instructions, if any. And, of course, discuss everything first with your doctor, to make sure that they also approve the said teas. In most cases, they have no reason not to – but better be safe, right?

Also, make sure that if you choose any that contain Milk Thistle, take that into account if you also use one of the best Milk Thistle supplements I’ve recommended (or any type of Milk Thistle supplementation) – you don’t want to get over the daily recommended doses!

Drinking tea won’t be enough to heal your liver

Do not treat these teas as medication. They’re supportive, not curative (at least not fully agreed upon by research). Their biggest benefits come from making hydration more pleasant, supporting digestion, and complementing a healthy lifestyle with potential liver detoxification benefits.

You will still have to make lifestyle changes and follow a proper, healthy diet. But this should not stop you from enjoying them in the meantime and seeing if they help improve your symptoms or not.

As long as they don’t do any extra harm, I see no reason not to give them a try – at least this is how I approach things and it has worked for me so far, as I have reversed my fatty liver.

But I repeat: I am sure that the biggest role was played by me following my strict diet, which helped me eat healthier foods, do more exercise, and minimize stress.

Teas and other supplements have helped – maybe – but I wouldn’t go as far as saying that they’re the thing that helped me reverse my condition.

But since we don’t have many options in regards to what to drink each day after being diagnosed, these potentially beneficial teas are really helpful – at least in terms of variety. If they do help the liver as well, then it’s even better!
